Disclosure of the meaning of classical music and the works of composers
Erik Satie(1866—1925) was a French composer and he was an influence on the Impressionist composer Claude Debussy, a life-long friend. Debussy remained the main person with whom he could discuss anything to do with music. Though they got on very well in the beginning, their friendship soured over time, mainly because of a certain form of rivalry and Satie's marked inclination towards self-destruction and misanthropy.
The title Clair de Lune means 'moonlight' in French, but what is interesting is that the piece was originally called 'Promenade Sentimentale' meaning a 'sentimental walk'. Gouache texture with the warm colour palette expresses the quiet and melancholy feeling of Clair de Lune.
The word Gymnopédies was derived from a festival of ancient Sparta at which young men danced and competed against each other unencumbered by clothing. The illustration on the poster refers to Satie's gentle and dreamy piano exercises.
"If I didn't have Debussy to discuss things a bit more elevated than what vulgar people talk about, I don't know how I'd manage to express my humble thoughts—if I still express them"
—Erik Satie
